Video: Chipped penalty FAIL costs promotion in Austria
Throwing it down the Pan-enka
There is a time and place for the cocky Penanka penalty. The deciding penalty in a promotion-deciding shootout is probably not the right time or place.
That’s the lesson Armin Hobel, captain of Austrian side Wattens, has learnt the hard way. His side were taking on Blau-Weiss Linz in a play-off to decide who would be promoted to the second tier of Austrian football.
Hobel stepped up to keep his side in the shootout and in contention for promotion. He opted for an appalling attempt at a chip penalty, which gave opposition keeper David Wimleitner time to dive to his right, jump up and still comfortably catch the ball before it crossed the line.
