David Beckham: ‘People said I was too old to play for England at 21’
David Beckham claims people thought he was too old to play for England just weeks after he had made his international debut.
Talking up his prospects of playing in the London 2012 Olympics, the 36-year-old reckons some people had dismissed him as being past-it at the age of 21.
He told BBC Sport: “People have been saying [I am too old] for the last 10 or 15 years and I’ve still continued to play for my country.
“Right now, I feel fit and still love playing, so I’m not finishing yet.”
The 36-year-old was aged just 21 when he claims the jibes about his age started. The LA Galaxy superstar made his England debut on September 1, 1996, at the age of 21.
