Manchester United youngster Phil Jones has blamed defensive colleague Rio Ferdinand for his midweek Champions League own goal against Roma.
The wonderkid revealed he had been laughing at CSKA Moscow defender Vassili Berezoutski following his comedy own goal in the early kick-off on Tuesday evening. And a combination of karma and Rio’s prophetic powers combined to result in Jones finding his own net just hours later.
He told Football Focus: “I think Rio cursed me. We were watching the CSKA Moscow game and the guy scored an own goal and I was just laughing. And he went to me: ‘Oh don’t worry about that, you’ll score a few of them in your time.’
“We came off at half-time and he was just like: ‘Sorry, mate. Sorry, mate.'”
Jones added: “He can take the blame for that one.”
