Today’s top five prospective Manchester United midfielders
It must be near to January: the transfer rumour mill is going into overdrive. Manchester United’s midfield problems seem to be the current hot topic.
Despite Michael Carrick showing a new-found propensity for lung-busting runs into the box and scoring goals, the papers seem to think that Sir Alex Ferguson will spend money in the transfer window to strengthen his side’s engine room. They just can’t decide who he will spend the money on.
Here are the current favourites.
1. Christian Eriksen
The Ajax midfielder could find himself cup-tied for the Europa League meeting between his former team and his current team if he moves to Old Trafford in January. The Daily Mail reports that Fergie sees the 19-year-old Dane as the man to bolster United’s midfield, and that has been backed up by comments from first-team coach Rene Meulensteen. He said: “It is true that a player like Eriksen would fit our transfer policy. He is being strongly linked with us, but to suggest that we are about to make a move is not true.”

2. Xherdan Shaqiri
After watching the 20-year-old orchestrate United’s downfall is Basel, Fergie is ready to get his own Shaq attack, according to the Daily Star. The highly-rated Switzerland international is being linked with a £10 million. But the chances of Shaqiri calling a premature end to his Champions League adventure with Basel seem slim.

3. Cheick Tiote
Newcastle midfielder Tiote was immense in his debut season in the Premier League and earned himself many admirers. Sir Alex Ferguson is among them, according to the Daily Mirror. The story says the move could be put on hold until the summer, but if Fergie does sign a midfielder in January it wouldn’t make much sense to hold fire on a player who is not cup-tied for European action.
Rumour rating: 6/10
4. Nicolas Gaitan
Another player Fergie has had a very good look at in this season’s Champions League campaign. The Benfica man is being strongly linked with a £30 million move to Old Trafford. The Independent and a host of other papers reckon United have already held talks over a move. This is another deal that could be put on hold until next summer.
Rumour rating: 9/10
5. Sami Khedira
There are a few mumblings of a possible move for Real Madrid midfielder Khedira. The Germany international isn’t guaranteed a starting berth at the Bernabeu, but a transfer to Old Trafford seems very unlikely.
