Top 5 current footballing jailbirds
With the current goings on surrounding Harry Redknapp allegedly in legal trouble for naming an account after his dog (or something along those lines), we look at five current footballers who have served time at the pleasure of her majesty.
1. Joey Barton
The twitter-loving philosophical tearaway was sentenced to four months for assault whilst at Manchester City and six months for assault and affray. Don’t buy the act, Joey’s still a nasty piece of work.
2. Lee Hughes
Sentenced to six years for leaving the scene of an accident and causing the death of Douglas Graham in 2004. The judge branded Hughes as ‘callous’ for his crime.
3. Marlon King
Convicted of eight separate crimes throughout his adult life, King was sent down for 18 months for handling stolen cars whilst at Gillingham and a sentence of the same length for a sexual assault causing ABH whilst at Wigan Athletic, who promptly sacked him.
4. Jermaine Pennant
Sentenced to 90 days behind bars whilst at Birmingham City for drink driving whilst banned from driving. Was released (famously with electronic tag) after just 30 days.
5. Graham Rix
Although not currently employed as a manager (working at the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain), but Rix was sentenced to a year in prison for conducting in underage sex and indecent assault. The former Hearts Manager was also forced to appear on the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years.
