Candidates to be next Leeds manager are a retro 1990s dream
Being forced to sell his captain during the January and consequently losing matches – heavily – did for Simon Grayson. While OTP feels slightly sorry for the recently sacked Grayson, we won’t be dwelling on his departure for too long because there are some exciting prospects in contention to be the new boss at Elland Road.
Undoubtedly our favourite name on the bookmakers’ list of potential replacements is former Leeds defender – and cult hero – Lucas Radebe. The South African legend has come in from 50/1 to 12/1 to be the next gaffer of his former club. OTP would love to see this and no doubt Leeds fans would too.
After all, the club mascot – Lucas The Kop Cat – is named in honour of Radebe. He also has a suite named after him at Elland Road.
If that’s not enough of a walk down a mid-1990s Merlin Premier League football sticker album memory lane for you, his former defensive colleague Gary Kelly is at 10/1! The stalwart right-back would be another great appointment (for neutrals in rose-tinted specs at least).
Unconvinced by their managerial pedigree? How about Gordon Strachan? He played alongside both Radebe and Kelly but, being a few years older, he has more experience under his belt. The Scot is 12/1 to get the job.
Fans of old school Leeds might also note with trepidation that David O’Leary is currently at 40/1.
We’ll leave the Leeds connections there, but former Chelsea midfielder Roberto Di Matteo – another 1990s sticker album favourite – is a 5/1 shot. The bookies obviously feel Ken Bates might call upon his old Stamford Bridge connections for the new appointment because Di Matteo’s ex-midfield partner Eddie Newton is a tad further out at 50/1, while Ruud Gullit is at 40/1.
Alas, it looks like we might have to forego this 1990s haze because newly unemployed ex-QPR gaffer Neil Warnock is hovering around evens. Indeed, some sources reckon it is Warnock’s availability that ensured Grayson got the bullet earlier today.
Leeds fans: Warnock, Radebe or someone else entirely?
