Manchester United star Danny Welbeck reveals he ‘never looked back’ after Manchester City released him aged eight
Danny Welbeck has revealed he could have been the local hero of the blue half of Manchester if City hadn’t released him when he was eight-years-old.
The young striker was on City’s books as a six-year-old, but was shown the door from Maine Road in December 1998. That looks like a bad move now, but was even worse when you consider City were very much in the shadows of their neighbours at that time.
Welbeck went to play for a local team and was soon snapped up by a very grateful United.
Welbeck told GQ: “Dad took me to one side. He had this concerned look on his face and told me that City had called before Christmas and wouldn’t be having me back.
“I was like, ‘Why didn’t you just tell me, Dad? It’s not a problem.’ I carried on at my club Fletcher Moss, scored a load more goals and soon I was at Manchester United. I never looked back.”
OTP supposes that raises the question, would Welbeck play regularly for City these days?
