Juan Mata grasses up Chelsea team-mate Fernando Torres over penalty refusal
Chelsea star Juan Mata has revealed he put the chance for Fernando Torres to end his goal drought on a plate this week – and his fellow Spaniard turned it down.
Mata claims he gave Torres first dibs on a penalty against Birmingham on Tuesday evening, but the goal-shy striker refused to take it.
He said: “I asked him if he wanted to take it because he provoked [won] the penalty. He said: ‘I’m not first on the list to shoot,’ so that’s what happened. It was because he forced the penalty and I gave him the chance. Robbie [Di Matteo] put a paper with who shoots penalties and that was it.”
The ex-Valencia man stepped up to take the spot-kick himself in the end, only to see it saved by Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle. So Torres couldn’t have done much worse.
The £50million man has not scored in 23 matches.
