Video: Greuther Furth bring on penalty specialist keeper for shootout, but he concedes in the dying seconds of extra-time!
German side Greuther Furth thought they’d got a great plan: hold Borussia Dortmund to a 0-0 in their German Cup semi-final, then stick a 6ft 6in sub goalie in nets for the penalty shootout and hope for the best.
It was all going so well. The match was goalless in the 118th minute when giant Bosnian keeper Jasmin Fejzic came on for his debut. A big target for Borussia’s penalty takers to beat… or at least he would have been if the match had gone to penalties.
Instead, he conceded a goal in the closing moments of the game and his side were knocked out of the competition.
Speaking afterwards, he said: “The coach had been promised me that I’d be brought on for a penalty shootout. I could only cry. It was terrible luck. I am so sorry for the club.”
