Chelsea staff suspended for snapping off Champions League trophy handle
Traditionally, football trophies are dropped and damaged by talented football professionals, who can expect nothing more than a clip around the ear and a viral video for their cumbersome calamity.
Unfortunately, that judicial system clearly doesn’t extend to more modest club employees after the Daily Mail reported that three members of Chelsea’s staff have been suspended after the Champions League trophy was damaged.
Just like your mum’s favourite family crockery, the prestigious silverware is one thing you really want to avoid dropping in life. Unfortunately, disaster struck for several staff members when their over-excitement of groping ‘Old big ears’ led to a handle snapping off.
There is no report of the horrified staff looking up a purchase of an inflatable replacement online, but we like to think it went through their minds.
Notably, a midnight raid on the trophy cabinet wasn’t at the heart of the story. On the contrary, the trophy was circulating around Stamford Bridge as a club thanks for the staff’s hard work during a successful season for the West London club.
That lovely sentiment now looks a touch misjudged as the trophy limps its way to a London silversmith for emergency repairs. Fingers crossed the historic prize will be spared the indignity of dying with John terry’s fingerprints smeared all over it.
