Paul Gascoigne confesses to pretty much all his pranks ever reported
We should never forget that before Mario Balotelli there was the original prankster, Paul Gascoigne. A reminder of the England legend’s jovial high-jinx is always welcome and that is exactly what we get in this light hearted video interview, courtesy of England shirt sponsors Umbro.
Whilst it’s still difficult to look at ‘Gazza’ without being somewhat concerned for his health, the England legend sounded in good form, his eyes lighting up with glee after he confirmed one seemingly ridiculous report from his playing days after another.
The former Tottenham and Lazio midfielder seemed to court particular trouble when it came to buses – confessing that he had taken the wheel of a tour bus in Piccaddilly Circus and completely totalled the Middlesborough team coach, the latter indiscretion costing him a cool £27,000, a fee that seemed entirely worth paying according to Gascoigne’s cheshire cat grin.
We still hold a candle for a story about Gazza as revealed by John Barnes at a recent event. Apparently on the morning of a World Cup group game at Italia ’90, Gascoigne remedied his insomnia by leaving the team hotel at 5am and went about cajoling two inebriated American tourists to play two full sets of tennis against him. We never want to pose that alleged event to Gascoigne for fear of it being even slightly untrue.
