David Beckham arrives at the London Olympics opening ceremony…on a speedboat
Blending the look of Milk Tray Man and James Bond, a tuxedo wearing David Beckham transported the Olympic torch to last night’s opening ceremony in London via a flashy speedboat – a super-slick looking journey that included whizzing under Tower Bridge with spectacular fireworks leading his way.
Everybody predicted that Ex-England captain David Beckham would make a cameo in the highly-anticipated curtain raiser and the world was certainly not disappointed with what transpired.
Whilst there were rumours of the midfielder pinging flaming footballs around the stadium, and our own expectations that Stuart Pearce’s face might be the recipient of those flammable strikes, there was something much more remarkable up Beckhams’ tattoo sleeves.
The rapid cruise around the Thames ended when the Manchester United legend passed the torch to 5-time Olympic gold medal winner Sir Steven Redgrave – who trundled the torch into the stadium for its final ascent into the London sky.
One of many highlights of a superb and often surreal opening ceremony, the appearance from Beckham was a clear gesture of thanks for his leading role in London winning the games back in 2005.
Whilst his absence from the Olympic football team remains a huge disappointment for Beckham, he was just about the coolest man on planet Earth last night – something we think will sit very comfortably with him indeed.
