Liverpool’s Luis Suarez rightly annoyed by anthem booing, shows shocking lack of self-awareness
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was quite rightly disappointed at booing during Uruguay’s national anthem. But he’s got completely the wrong end of the stick when it comes to guessing why he was booed.
The Uruguayan anthem was interrupted ahead of last night’s Olympic match against Great Britain when Suarez’s image flashed up on the big screen causing jeers and boos from the crowd.
Suarez knows exactly why he was targeted.
He said: “I think they jeer me and they boo me because they must be scared of facing a player like me. They fear me, but that doesn’t affect me. I’m just hurt because we lost and we are going home.
“I can take the abuse, but I think it was a total lack of respect from the crowd to boo when we were trying to sing our national anthem. I think those things should not happen.”
Nothing to do with the racism row, controversial non-handshake, Ghana handball, opponent biting or diving whatsoever.
