Crystal Palace play-off winner Kevin Phillips says he was spurred on by Watford boos
Kevin Phillips says the boos from fans of former club Watford spurred him on as he secured promotion to the Premier League for Crystal Palace.
The veteran striker started his long career at Vicarage Road, but was not given a warm reception by the Hornets supporters at Wembley. And they probably like him even less now he’s scored the winner against them in the Championship play-off final.
He said: “I suppose being booed by 30,000 odd Watford supporters spurred me on. It was a great feeling to see it go in and I kind of drew on all my experience.
“I thought about it over the last few days. We’ve practiced penalties, I didn’t because I don’t believe in that and I just tried to draw on all my experience, put my laces through it.
“The old cliché ‘don’t change your mind’ and just try and smash it in the corner and luckily it went into the top corner.”
