Arsenal set to miss out on Bernard as Hulk recommends Porto
Arsenal risk losing out on the signing of Brazil international Bernard, according to the player’s father.
The Gunners are known to have a strong interest in the Atletico Mineiro player, but that has yet to turn into a firm transfer bid.
Meanwhile, Bernard’s international team-mate Hulk has advised the 20-year-old to join his former club Porto, saying he will have a better chance of fulfilling his potential there.
Bernard’s father, Delio Duarte, said: “Nothing is decided yet but we know there is interest from Arsenal. However, there has been nothing official from them.”
It seems that Portugal has become the £22m-rated midfielder’s preferred destination following Hulk’s intervention.
Duarte added: “Hulk has convinced Bernard that Porto would be better for him at this stage of his career.”
Arsene Wenger is known to be keen on Bernard and sent scouts to watch him win the Copa Libertadores in what will probably be his final game in Brazil.
The lack of a formal bid is therefore confusing. The Daily Express speculates that the Gunners might be waiting to ensure they have got Gervinho off the wage bill before progressing with a Bernard deal. If that’s the case, the danger is that he will have already moved elsewhere in the meantime.
