Video: Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says second choice players risk missing World Cup
Questions about Wayne Rooney were banned at today’s Chelsea press conference, but Jose Mourinho talked at length about the importance of playing regularly for your club team in order to make an impression at next year’s World Cup.
He was asked if having the tournament looming would make it tougher to motivate players for Chelsea.
You got the impression that his advice was not only for the benefit of current Blues players.
He said: “For any player who wants to go for the World Cup, if they are second choice in their club they are in trouble, they are in trouble.
“So I think this is a crucial year for that and many national team coaches are also worried because they want their players to play regular in their teams.”
Rooney has reportedly been left “angry and confused” by comments made by Manchester United manager David Moyes suggesting he would be backup for Robin Van Persie this season.
