Everton reject £28m bid from Man Utd for Maroune Fellaini and Leighton Baines
Manchester United have had a £28m joint-bid for Everton duo Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines rejected.
David Moyes’ latest attempt at a raid on his former club has been thwarted by the Toffees.
The move valued Fellaini at £16m and Baines at £12m. Everton had already rejected a £12m bid for the England left-back in June, but the champions returned with another offer at the same level.
Fellaini’s £23.5m release clause expired at the end of July. It now appears that Moyes might have been sitting tight to avoid tempting a rival club into activating that clause before opening the bidding at a lower price.
Both players started Roberto Martinez’s first competitive game in charge at Norwich on Saturday.
Only last week Martinez had claimed that Everton had now won the battle to keep Baines and expressed his relief that Fellaini’s release clause had expired.
But the Liverpool Echo reports that a bid for both players was received by the club just 48 hours before they were due to kick-off the Premier League season.
