Napoli boss Rafa Benitez ‘surprised’ Liverpool let him sign Pepe Reina
New Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has revealed his surprise at learning that Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina was available.
The Spaniard immediately took his compatriot to Italy on a season-long loan deal.
The move came as a surprise to Reina because nobody told him he was being sent to Napoli until the deal was done. Now, Benitez has revealed he was equally shocked.
Speaking ahead of the Emirates Cup, he said: “Obviously I know the situation and I was surprised because we were trying to sign Julio Cesar, it was a surprise when Pepe Reina was available. For us it was a big boost. Really important because he’s a great player so really pleased with that.
“I think he has a lot of respect for the club [Liverpool] and I was talking to him about that. He was surprised with the decision. He was surprised because nobody told him but still he has a very good relationship with the fans and with the club so I don’t think that he has any problem with them.”
