Video: Clint Dempsey explains why he quit Spurs for MLS
Seattle Sounders’ new signing Clint Dempsey has been explaining why he decided to leave Spurs – and the fact that he is getting a better basic salary than David Beckham was on at LA Galaxy didn’t even get a mention.
The USA international says he had the “itch” to come home after six-and-a-half years in the UK with Fulham and Tottenham.
He said: “I had two more years on my contract. I was already starting to get the itch to be honest with you, I wanted to to come back to the States.
“I just missed being in America. That’s where I was born. I wanted to help continue the growth of the game here. And like you said, you can’t help the growth of the game if you come back and you don’t perform.
“I understand there is a lot of pressure on me to succeed, a lot of expectations that others have on me, but also the expectations I put on myself and when I decided to come back to this league, I want to come and make an impact. I want to do a good job. I don’t want to come and be passive and not be able to make a difference in games. I want to win things.
“I’m still going to work as hard as ever to make sure that my game is at the highest level possible. And I’m doing everything I can to help the team win.”
And there’s the £5.2m salary, Clint. Musn’t forget that.
He added: “The Seattle Sounders moved mountains to get me here.
“It was an opportunity to come back when I was in my prime and help continue growth of this league and it’s a challenge that I’m excited about.”
