Andre Villas Boas: ‘Gareth Bale put Spurs under intense pressure’
Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas says Gareth Bale put the club under “intense” pressure to force through his move to Real Madrid.
Off-the-record briefings by sources close to Bale during the transfer saga and the player’s refusal to hand in an official transfer request meant the majority of Spurs fans were kept onside throughout the summer, with many opting to blame the media reporting what was happening rather than Bale himself.
Now, Villas Boas has spoken out to confirm that Bale was putting the club under pressure to sell him.
He said: “The pressure we were subjected to by the player has been intense.
“The influence of Real Madrid has been very big and you get to a point where you have to consider if it’s feasible not to accept an offer and whether you can press on with a player in that state of mind.
“Obviously, we should be happy with the transfer fee that was paid. Players want to win championships and I believe that with Gareth that is within reach.
“At the end of the day, it’s up to a player to decide if he wants to stay or wants to go.”
He was speaking at a meeting of coaches at the Uefa headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, to discuss transfer window dates.
Since completing his move Bale has acknowledged that he would have quit Spurs even if they had qualified for the Champions League.
