Arsenal and Liverpool given hope on Martin Montoya signing by his agent
Arsenal and Liverpool’s chances of signing Barcelona defender Martin Montoya after his agent suggested that a free transfer away from Camp Nou is a real possibility.
Jose Maria Orobitg went as far as to namecheck Brendan Rodgers’ side as he explained that his client might not extend his contract beyond this season.
The 22-year-old right-back is highly-rated, but rarely starts for Barca with Daniel Alves ahead of him in the pecking order.
And it seems guarantees about playing time will be an important factor as Montoya decides where to play his football next season.
Orobitg told Sky Italia: “For the moment he is under contract with FC Barcelona until the end of the season.
“However, the contract extension has still not arrived.
“We have talked but there is no certainty that Martin Montoya would hold down a first-team spot, because right now Daniel Alves closes the door.
“The transfer window is closed, but I can tell you that the contract extension may not be successful.
“In the past, Inter Milan, Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, Dortmund and Liverpool were interested.
“Anything could happen between now and June.”
Both the Gunners and the Reds were linked with the player over the summer.
