Marco Van Ginkel will miss the rest of the season with the knee injury he sustained during Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Swindon.

The Dutchman was substituted in the first-half after twisting his knee awkwardly. He immediately looked to be in trouble, but initially tried to play on.

But an MRI scan carried out yesterday at the club’s Cobham training ground confirmed that he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 20-year-old now faces several months on the sidelines.

Chelsea assistant first team coach Steve Holland said after the match: “It’s too early to say, but it doesn’t look good for Marco.

“We’ll have to wait for the results of the scan.”

That assessment proved to be accurate, with the youngster’s hopes of going to next summer’s World Cup with the Netherlands now in tatters.
