Manchester United linked with £25m bid for Southampton’s Luke Shaw
Manchester United are planning a £25m raid on Southampton for young left-back Luke Shaw, according to reports in today’s papers.
The Daily Star claims that the champions are willing to meet Saints’ huge asking price in January in the hope of beating their Premier League rivals to the England Under-21 international.
While it is clear that David Moyes wants to strengthen at left-back, a £25m bid for an 18-year-old seems like a strange move for a club that would not offer more than £12m for arguably the best left-back in the country during the summer transfer window.
Yes, United are likely to get more service out of Shaw than they would 28-year-old Leighton Baines, but a mammoth offer for Shaw would support Everton’s claims that the offer for Baines was “derisory”.
Moyes also failed in a last-gasp attempt to bring Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao.
If he’s using those set-backs as a reason to look long-term, the Scot still won’t have everything his own way.
Shaw recently signed a new five-year deal at St Mary’s, so Southampton are under no obligation to sell.
And any United bid would probably flush out offers from their Premier League rivals. Any offer from Chelsea would be very tempting to boyhood Blues fan Shaw.
