Arsene Wenger says Mikel Arteta could make his return from injury this weekend.
The Spaniard picked up a thigh injury ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa.
But his recovery has been slightly quicker than expected and Wenger has suggested he could feature against Stoke.
Wenger said: “The news we have after the game is quite positive. Mikel Arteta is coming back in the squad, maybe.
“He’s back in full training today so we’ll have to assess how ready he is until Sunday. He could be in the squad.”
Asked if Arteta’s return was a boost, he added: “Of course, because at the moment, in midfield and upfront, we are short.”
Wenger hopes Arteta’s compatriot Santi Cazorla will be next to emerge from the treatment room, but he is set to be miss a few more games.
He said: “I think the next one that will be back after that is Cazorla.
“It’s difficult to assess but maybe that is three weeks away.”
