Video: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says signing Mesut Ozil was dependent on Spurs selling Gareth Bale
Arsene Wenger says he thinks he was only able to bring Mesut Ozil to Arsenal because Spurs sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
He said he was surprised that Real Madrid were prepared to let the Germany international leave and thinks the arrival of Bale from Spurs must have been the reason for that.
He said: “Honestly, I think it was linked with the Bale transfer.
“I don’t know exactly what happened inside the club (Real Madrid). In Madrid, was it down to financial reasons? Was it down to the fact that when they bought Bale they had Isco and maybe they had to let somebody go. I was surprised, yes.”
Wenger revealed that the deal was 90 per cent done as the Gunners prepared to take on Spurs in the north London derby.
He continued: “To say it was all under control is a bit exaggerated because not a lot was under control but I told you two or three days before, I looked a bit lonely when I said that, I was optimistic but in the end it happened.
“I thought we had the chance to do it – a small one but we worked very hard on it until the end.
“It was very complicated in the end because the timing was short. On Sunday when I came to the Tottenham game, just at 2pm I thought we would manage to do it.
“We were 90 per cent there.”
