Video: Jermain Defoe says he doesn’t want to be Spurs’ super sub, but almost talks himself into it
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe claimed he doesn’t want to be an impact player from the bench, then went on to explain why he’s perfectly suited for the role.
But having nearly talked himself into, the England international finally reiterates that the life of a super-sub is not for him.
He said: “I don’t want to be sitting on the bench and be an impact player because at the end of the day you want to start games.
“At times you come on and you can’t make that impact you would like to make because it’s difficult.
“Obviously, people might look at me and think ‘he comes on and is always sharp’.
“But its only because I sit there and I’ll analyse the game and think where can I get in, where am I going to get opportunities to score. I really study the game when I’m sitting on the bench…
“You might come off the bench and score one goal, but you might start the game and play 90 minutes and score two. I’d rather do that.”
