Liverpool’s Joe Gomez out injured for the season
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
The 18-year-old, who joined the Reds from Charlton Athletic and had established himself as a regular starter under Brendan Rodgers in the early stages of the season, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury playing for England Under-21s in their 3-0 win over Kazakhstan on Tuesday evening.
New Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will now be unable to call upon Gomez’s services for the remainder of the campaign after the £3.5m signing
England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate had initially played down the injury as “nothing too serious” after the youngster was taken off with 10 minutes remaining, but Gomez underwent a series of scans upon his return to Liverpool’s Melwood training base today.
Those scans revealed the full extent of his injury.
Gomez had made five Premier League appearances so far this term, establishing himself as first-choice left-back in the opening weeks of the season, despite being right-footed.
