USA national anthem crushed in Scotland friendly
If you felt slightly sorry for Scotland after their sizeable 5-1 spanking at the hands of the USA over the weekend, spare a thought for another once proud institution – the American national anthem.
As is tradition across the pond, a young attractive girl was rolled out to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the match-up and provide the stadium with the refined vocal gymnastics they demand from such a custom.
It’s fair to say things didn’t go quite to plan for singer Victoria Zarlenga. We are getting a good ear for bad singing performances – most recently thanks to Javier Zanetti – and this lung-buster showed an almost exemplary disregard for the human ear drum.
Perhaps down to nerves or a temperamental PA system, Zarlenga provided a slow and torturous dismantling of the anthem. There are many reviews popping up on the internet analysing the ‘worst national anthem rendition ever,’ but we haven’t seen anything more telling than Landon Donovan’s restrained yet mortified expression.
