How to Pick MLS Best Bets
Not satisfied with our picks? Here's how to make your own picks using tried and tested methodology.
Your Specialist Subject
Being an expert on the sport never hurts when it comes to making solid betting predictions. If you are particularly knowledgeable about MLS then you're already off to a brilliant advantage.
If you feel like you could brush up on your knowledge then check out our guide to the best soccer betting apps. Here you'll find lots of sites and apps with live streaming, so you can watch your picks play out in real time and learn from them.
Previous Head to Head Results
The chances are the teams that you're betting on will have come head to head before. If this happened in fairly recent months or years then there's probably a lot to be learned from this match-up. Take a look at the different play styles and how they worked to the benefit or detriment of the teams.
Following Odds
It doesn't always pay to follow the crowd, but if you see odds shifting quickly then there's often a good reason for it. Understanding soccer odds is crucial to developing a good picking strategy, so don't scrimp on the study!
Key Player Stats
One player alone can't win a game, but a solid team with one outstanding player has a huge advantage. Look into the recent statistics of any key players, including how many shots they've made on target, whether they're returning from an injury and anything else you think is pertinent to the result of the game.
MLS Betting Strategies: How to Win MLS Bets (Almost) Every Time
Now that you know how to make (hopefully) the right picks, it's time to look at how to capitalize on those picks to ensure you win. While we can't guarantee you'll win every time, taking note of these tips will help to improve your chances.
Home Team Advantage
This is a common idea, but it's common for a reason: the home team really does have an advantage. If you think it will be tight between two teams, then a factor like this could be the decider.
Watch the Odds
If you're wavering on one of your picks then it can help to watch the odds leading up to the game. If people seem to be placing money in agreement with your bets then you should feel confident enough to go for it. However, if the money is moving out of line with your thoughts then it could be worth reconsidering.
One thing to always be sure of is that you're getting the best MLS odds available. Settling for poor odds might not make too much difference on individual bets, but after a while it can really start to eat into your profits.
Make Use of Bonuses
A good bonus can make a huge difference to your bankroll. You can use free bets to make the sort of outside bets that you might usually avoid, or you can use a deposit match bonus to make larger wagers.
Making sure you read the bonus terms will ensure you only accept the bonuses that are useful to you.
Keep Emotions Out of It
Everybody knows that emotional betting is a bad idea, but it can be difficult to remember this when you're caught up in the moment. Try not to bet your way out of a bad situation, or bet on the team you support simply to show solidarity.
Bet Within Your Means
Finally, it's incredibly important to only bet with money that you can afford to lose. While we hope that all of your bets come good, the chances are that sometimes even your best laid bets will result in a loss.
Types of Bets on the MLS
MLS betting is one of the most varied and exciting sports to wager on. As such, there are lots of different options for the kind of MLS bets you can place. Below is a guide to the most common types of bets and what they mean.
Moneyline
Moneyline bets are the most straightforward, with this type of wager you simply bet on which team you think will win the game.
Parlay
Parlays can combine various different types of bet, or stick to just one type. The key is that they must contain more than one 'leg'.
For example, you could place a parlay with a moneyline bet that one team will win, a prop bet that a player in a different game will score at least one goal, and a totals bet that four goals, or more, will be scored.
This parlay would have three 'legs' or individual bets. Generally speaking, the more legs in a parlay, the higher the payout, as you only win if all of your bets are correct.
Same Game Parlay
A same game parlay works exactly the same as any other parlay, but all of the events that you wager on must take place in the same game.
Typically, same game parlays pay out slightly less generously than other parlay bets, so you should take this into account when making your bets.
Prop Bet
A prop bet is a wager on a specific event happening. This is usually confined to within a game, such as a specific player scoring a goal, or being given a yellow card.
In some events you can even wager on things happening outside of the game, such as the color of Gatorade the winning coach gets sprayed with after the Super Bowl.
Point Spread
The point spread refers to the handicap given to individual teams. So, if the favorite team is predicted by bookmakers to win by 2 goals, they'll se the point spread at 2. This means if you bet on the underdog to win the point spread, they only have to lose by less than 2 goals for your bet to pay out.
Usually, soccer point spreads range from 0.5 to 2 goals.
Over/Under or Totals
These kinds of bets let you wager on how many goals you think there will be in a game. The sportsbook might set the predicted total at 2 goals. If you bet on the under and there was a total of one goal scored then your bet would win. If you bet on the over then your bet would lose.
How Our Tipsters Choose the Best MLS Bets Today
As well as being huge soccer fans, our tipsters have a set of criteria that they look into before recommending their bet of the day. Below are the criteria that we always use to make our best bet predictions.
Team Form
Studying the recent form of the teams in question is the first port of call. We look at how many wins, losses, and draws they have had, as well as how many goals they've scored, shot on target, and saved.
Next our tipsters will dive into the specifics, looking for anything of note that could give one team an advantage over the other.
Previous Head to Heads
Any previous head to heads are always considered. This kind of information can help to give a more well rounded picture of how the teams perform when they actually go up against one another.
Player Statistics & Injuries
Sadly, major league soccer is a sport that is plagued by injury. This means our experts have to be aware of any players that are either out because of injury, or returning to form after time off.
As well as injury, we need to consider whether a player is at risk of being asked to leave the pitch.
