Mercenary Belgium fans sell their Euro 2012 support to Holland on eBay
Remember we told you about the Belgium supporters who had put their Euro 2012 allegiances up for grabs on eBay? Well, the auction has ended.
The lot was won by an anonymous Dutch bidder who paid £2,400 to have the 20,000 Belgians support the Netherlands during the tournament. Unfortunately, it might be too little, too late for them!
Belgian fan Lieven Sheire told Real Time Brussels: “It’s been 10 years since we competed in a big tournament. I’ve been too bored.
“I definitely needed a team.”
But the auction ended in the worst possible scenario for the Belgium fans.
Lieven added: “There was one country that we were afraid would buy us. And that was Holland.
“But after a bit of soul-searching and a quick trip across the border – to pick up a lot of orange stuff — I suddenly thought ‘this is going to work’.
“The Dutch have so many cliches that you can enthusiastically dive into.”
The group have promised to donate their earnings to Unicef.
