Last week we highlighted the above video – a rather enjoyable imagining of a world where Wayne Rooney moonlights as secret agent 007. The Manchester United striker’s performances at international level are a bit ropey so it would be interesting to see if he could buck that trend on the biggest spying stage. Like Rooney’s head, we were all ears.
But it turns out we were focusing on the wrong scouser – for the true heir to the tuxedo-propping throne is Steven Gerrard. That’s according to the incumbent, actor Daniel Craig.
Asked by Liverpool’s official website who he would rather be, Bond or Liverpool captain, the craggy-jawed Skyfall star replied: “I don’t think I could keep up any more so Bond will do, but Steven Gerrard would make a good Bond.
He is a good leader so, you know what, seriously, who knows?”
Quite a powerful blessing indeed (albeit coming from a lifelong Liverpool fan). We’ll have to wait to see if M comes in for Gerrard with a big money move in the January transfer window.
“The name’s G, Stevie G” doesn’t quite work for OTP, but we still think the Anfield legend has plenty to give the franchise. Dispatching Bond baddies with rocketing 30-yard strikes, a cameo from MI5 chief Rafa Benitez briefing Gerrard with ‘the facts’ and a soaring soundtrack penned by a certain Mr Collins would all be welcome additions to the much beloved movie series.
