Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge stretchered off during England vs Republic of Ireland
Daniel Sturridge will miss England’s match against Brazil after picking up an injury during last night’s draw with the Republic of Ireland.
The Liverpool striker was stretchered off with an ankle injury after 38 minutes.
England manager Roy Hodgson said: “He’s not going to Brazil. He had a good start and we were sad to lose him.
“He hadn’t played for a while and was carrying a slight injury. I fear it will keep him out for a few weeks.”
There was initial concern that the injury might be more serious, and the extent of the damage has not yet been confirmed. The 23-year-old, who was making his first start for England, is expected to undergo a scan later today.
Liverpool fans will be hoping Hodgson’s prognosis of a few weeks is accurate, with Luis Suarez already missing for the start of next season.
