Manchester United boss David Moyes is having one last shot at landing Cesc Fabregas this summer, despite the player’s public proclamations that he wants to stay at Barcelona.
The champions are preparing a third and final £40m bid in a last-ditch effort to persuade Barca to sell.
The intention is that if they convince the Catalan giants to accept an offer that will play up to Fabregas’ doubts as to whether Barca see him as a vital part of their team. He has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot since returning to Camp Nou from Arsenal in 2011.
The signing of Brazil international Neymar means there is now one less attacking position up for grabs.
Fabregas is currently sidelined with ankle ligament damage, but is close to a return to action. United will monitor his progress as he returns to fitness before making a third bid in the run-up to the September 2 transfer deadline, according to reports in the Daily Telegraph.
By that time, the Spain international should have had chance to see what his prospects of regular starts are for the coming season.
