Video: Arsene Wenger praises ‘patient’ Arsenal
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praised the patience of his side as they secured a 1-2 away win against Marseille in their Champions League opener.
The Frenchman was happy to see his players ride out a strong performance from the home team in the first-half, then take their own chances in the second-half.
He said: “Well I believe first of all Marseille had a good game, especially a very good first half. And overall we didn’t make big mistakes at the back and we were patient enough to win the game in the second half.
“But I felt we were a bit within ourselves in the first half, a bit timid, and that Marseille was more mobile and first on the ball.
“They dropped in the second half and we could take advantage of our strong moments in the game and that got us three very important points.”
Wenger also emphasised the statistical importance of the Gunners getting the first goal.
He continued: “You know statistics are fairly simple. At this level, in the Champions League, the team that scores first wins in 78 percent of matches. And I think the game tonight was and illustration of this.
“You could feel that the team who was going to score first was going to win this game.”
