Jay Spearing frozen out at Bolton over Liverpool fee
Former Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing has been left in limbo at current club Bolton Wanderers over a fee due to the Reds.
The Trotters will owe the Anfield club a further £100,000 if Spearing, aged 27, makes another appearance for them.
One more game for Neil Lennon’s side would leave cash-strapped Bolton with a bill they cannot afford to pay as part of the add-ons agreed when Liverpool academy graduate joined them in a £1.75m deal three years ago.
Lennon reportedly only found out about the clause in the days before last weekend’s 1-2 home defeat to Preston North End and promptly dropped Spearing from his squad for that game.
He revealed that the club had contacted Liverpool to find out if they would consider deferring collection of the payment until the Trotters are on a surer financial footing, but the Reds declined that offer.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Lennon said: “We had to leave Jay out because we can’t afford to pay money to Liverpool.
“We did ask if they would defer it but they said no, and that’s fine, it’s their prerogative.
“If he plays another game we have to pay a certain amount of money to them but we can’t afford that right now.
“That leaves him in limbo, a difficult position. And that is hard to take as well because I think we missed him against Preston.”
