Liverpool reject Arsenal’s £40m + £1 bid for Luis Suarez
Arsenal have had a £40,000,001 bid for Luis Suarez rejected by Liverpool.
The Gunners launched the unusual bid spurred on by assertions from Suarez’s agent Pere Guardiola that his client has a release clause for offers in excess of £40m.
Liverpool appear to disagree and have turned down the offer.
The Times reports that the Reds have always had a different interpretation of the clause in question than their player. The Anfield hierarchy are adamant that the clause merely requires them to consider £40m-plus bids, not accept them. If that’s correct, it might be the most pointless contract clause ever.
But having given due consideration to the bid, Liverpool have rejected the bid for their 26-year-old striker.
Suarez has made it clear that he wants to leave the club this summer. He initially blamed the English media for forcing him to move elsewhere, but it is looking like Champions League football is a more decisive factor.
