Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was pleased to learn of Manchester United’s interest in signing him, according to the Bavarian giants’ president Karl Heinz Rummenigge.

Speaking at a press conference today, Rummenigge claimed Schweinsteiger had told him personally that he was flattered to learn that Louis van Gaal’s United are keen to sign him.

German broadcaster Sport1 quotes him as saying: “I was on the phone with Bastian Schweinsteiger on vacation. We will meet when he’s back.

“I make no bones about the fact that I have been heard in this conversation that he is flattered by the interest from England.”

United have been linked with an attempt to sign the 30-year-old World Cup winner in recent weeks.

It has also been suggested that Red Devils winger Angel Di Maria could move in the opposite direction in the current transfer window.

But Rummenigge would not be drawn on those reports. He said he had not “denied or confirmed” that the Argentina international is a transfer target.

But he did got on to say that a direct swap deal with United involving Di Maria and Bayern players was never suggested by either club.
