Bafana Bafana balls up
South Africa were celebrating qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations when it emerged that they had not done enough to make it to the tournament.
Bafana Bafana had drawn last night’s match with Sierra Leone 0-0. A win for either side would have secured qualification. The other side in contention for a place, Niger, lost 3-0 to Egypt. That left all three nations on nine points.
South Africa thought that was enough to see them through and begun their celebrations. The players ran around the pitch in delight and the president of the South African FA Kirsten Nematandani went on TV to congratulate the side on their qualification.
But it quickly became apparent that Niger actually had the better head-to-head record than the other teams and that they had secured their first ever qualification for their first Nations Cup.
D’oh.
