According to Wigan chief Dave Whelan yesterday, Roberto Martinez has had an offer to take up the Anfield hot-seat dangled in front of him. A considerable feat considering the Latics suffered a eight game losing streak before Christmas. Amongst mutterings about what a phenomenally talented man Martinez is, Whelan said:
“He had a meeting on Thursday with the owner of Liverpool in Miami. I think they have made some kind of offer.”
Whether Martinez will bite is not yet clear but from the looks of this picture, relations with Liverpool owner John W. Henry have got off on the right foot.
We certainly never saw Roy Hodgson supping on a frappuccino with the American millionaire. Normally such heavyweight talks take place in a stuffy boardroom, with a PowerPoint presentation flicking away and Alan Curbishley waiting patiently outside the door.
Delightfully Henry has taken a more laid back approach to proceedings by waltzing around in the sun with Martinez. We are still awaiting the images of them both rollerblading in cut-off denim shorts along Miami beach to circulate.
For now this charming window on to their first encounter will do just fine. Whether the ’70% off sale’ poster in the background is the first indication that the Spaniard wishes to dump the considerable deadwood on Liverpool’s books is not clear, but it would be a sensible start. Time for the Merseyside club to wake up and smell the coffee.
