Surprise arrivals at Newcastle’s training ground are usually of the French persuasion. But they upped their English (and Irish) quota by parachuting in boyband One Direction for a training session.

A veteran Magpies five-a-side team of manager Alan Pardew and coaching staff John Carver, Andy Woodman, Steve Stone and Peter Beardsley defeated the poptastic triallists, which probably put paid to any hopes of securing a contract at St James’ Park.

Niall Horan from the group said: “It was brilliant to be here. We’d like to thank the club and Alan Pardew for having us down and for getting us involved.”

Bandmate Harry Styles added: “It was good fun coming out to have a look around and to meet the staff and players. We don’t really get chance to come out and play – especially 11-a-side – so we really enjoyed it.”

He later tweeted: “Just had my first ice bath. Note: If someone is laughing as you’re getting into something, you probably should stop getting in.”

But Styles left the Toon with a ringing endorsement from right-back Danny Simpson, who said he was a “proper safe guy”.
