New Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini is plotting an attempt to sign Robin van Persie, according to reports.

During his time in charge of Manchester City, Mancini lost out to Manchester United in the battle to sign Van Persie from Arsenal in 2012.

But he is now ready to make a fresh attempt to sign the Netherlands international, claims the Daily Telegraph.

The deal could take place next summer when Van Persie will enter the final year of his £250,000-a-week contract.

United fans have been expressing concerns over the 31-year-old’s form and fitness so far this season. After another underwhelming display against form club Arsenal last weekend, in which he only managed 13 touches of the ball, his place in the team is under threat.

One potential stumbling block is the £10m loyalty bonus due to Van Persie if he sees out his contract at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, he might decide to forego that bonus if he is out of the team come the end of the season in order to secure regular starts for the closing stages of his career.

United would not be able to recoup any more than £10m of the £24m they paid for Van Persie if they did sell him next summer.
