Hannover goalie dead after being hit by train
Germany keeper Robert Enke has died after he was hit by a train at a level crossing near to Hannover. The 32-year-old’s death is being treated as suicide by police.
The German football federation (DFB) said in a statement: “The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock.”
The Hannover player, who previously played for Jena, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Benfica, Barcelona, Fenerbahce and Tenerife, had been tipped to be Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper for next summer’s World Cup.
Enke’s daughter Lara died in 2006 of a rare heart condition when she was just two. He leaves behind his wife, Teresa, and an eight-month-old daughter the couple adopted in May.
