Snoods are facing being outlawed by FIFA. Football’s latest fashion craze is being threatened with the chop amid concerns that they could be dangerous.
Stars such as Arsenal’s Samir Nasri, Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Manchester City’s… well, just Manchester City have propelled the neckwear to prominence this season by sporting snoods throughout the winter months.
But the snood’s footballing future is now in doubt.
FIFA’s law-making International FA Board (IFAB) has got snoods on the agenda for its meeting on March 5 and will be discussing whether they pose safety problems.
A FIFA spokesman said: “We want a debate over the snood and whether it could be dangerous. There may be a safety issue – if for example a player was running through on goal and an opponent grabbed his snood, that could pose a potential danger to his neck.”
Any Ipswich player who attempted to wear a snood under Roy Keane’s management can probably vouch that wearing snoods can indeed be dangerous.
