Mafioso Balotelli

We told you in June that Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli had been named in a report published by an Italian law enforcement agency over suggestions that he had been associating with known mafia bosses.

The report suggested that Balotelli was given a tour of Naples’ drug-ridden Scampia district by Salvatore Silvestri, of the Lo Russo clan, and Biagio Esposito, of the Scissionisti clan. Both clans are Camorra organised crime gangs.

Now it seems that Italian police want to talk to the striker about his contact with the gangs as part of an investigation into money-laundering.

There is no suggestion that Balotelli has committed a crime and when news of the report first emerged he denied knowing the two men were mobsters.

At the time, he said: “I had absolutely no idea who those people were. That day in Naples there were many people around me. I am astonished and disappointed, especially for the effect this news story could have on my family.”
