Newcastle United have announced plans to install slides at the Metro stations near St James’ Park in an effort to get fans to the ground quicker on matchdays.
The steps from the Metro station near the Gallowgate end of the ground have huge amounts of fan traffic passing through them, and city design company NE1 have proposed plans that currently are being operated in Utrecht train station in Holland.
Rather than rush down the stairs, fans will instead jump down the slide, which should help to reduce clogging and any danger of crushing.
Adrian Waddell of NE1 ltd, said:
The slides are intended to inject some fun into the city centre and take their inspiration from Holland where slides have been installed in a busy railway station to speed up access to train platforms and to inject new life into an area. NE1’s slides, like the rest of our pocket parks, are designed to attract attention and get people talking.
