Wigan’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Millwall was marred by violent scenes among the Lions’ supporters.

Millwall fans clashed with each other and police during the second half of yesterday’s match at Wembley. Fights broke out between the Championship side’s supporters, leaving several supporter bloodied.

Police, who moved in with batons to break-up the fight, then became embroiled in the violence. One officer’s hat was stolen by a fan.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan appeared to suggest the Millwall fans would have been better attacking his club’s supporters.

He said: “I can’t understand why the Millwall fans would fight each other. It just gives football a very, very poor reputation.

“We know Millwall are tough, their team’s tough to play, the supporters are Millwall, Millwall, Millwall… But don’t fight each other. I couldn’t understand that.”
