Newcastle director of football Joe Kinnear allegedly made a move to sign Birmingham winger Shane Ferguson – only to discover that he’s on loan at St Andrew’s from the Magpies.

Kinnear thought he had spotted a great talent during a scouting trip to Birmingham but was later informed that Ferguson already played for his club, reports the Sunday People.

The bumbling former Wimbledon manager watched the Blues’ Capital One Cup tie against Swansea in September and approached their officials after the game to discuss signing the 22-year-old.

After realising that it wasn’t a wind-up, the City hierarchy were forced to explain Kinnear’s error to him.

A Birmingham source told the Sunday People: “Ferguson had a particularly good game that night and Joe Kinnear told one of our officials he was interested in signing him.

“At first our guy thought he was joking but then he realised Kinnear did not know Ferguson was already a Newcastle player.”
