Jamie Carragher critical of Liverpool defensive signings Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was scathing in his assessment of the club’s new defensive signings Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno following the defeat to Manchester City last night.
Lovren signed for the Reds for a hefty £20m over the summer, while Moreno arrived last week for a similar fee but both struggled last night and played their part in the 3-1 defeat to the Premier League champions.
Liverpool’s problems last season were largely blamed on their shaky defending, which Carragher blamed for the defeat last night.
‘He (Lovren) didn’t play well tonight. The whole back four never really functioned well,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“He’s had a difficult night, him and Moreno on that side. It’s basic back four work and it’s something Liverpool are going to have to work on.
“If that happens a lot in this league, you’re going to get punished. That back four of Manchester City was the difference between tonight in this game.”
Before the game, Carragher highlighted Lovren’s price tag by pointing out that “these were the type of games you pay £20m for a centre-back for”.
