1. Andros Townsend could be a key player in this qualifying campaign. There’s probably going to be a lot of trying to break down deep defences, and the Spurs man showed that he can make a difference in that regard.

2. Predictably, this was another case in point for a minnows’ pre-qualification tournament. It’s difficult to know what anybody got out of this match.

3. Phil Jagielka proved he’s not just about the wondergoals. He can weigh in with the scrappy ones, too.

4. A Roy and Ray rollicking was clearly delivered at half-time. Hodgson made two changes and Lewington stationed himself at the edge of the technical area to bawl at the players in the early stages of the second-half. It seemed to work – England did improve.

5. Either this was a tough sell to the English public or Club Wembley kept the kitchen open throughout the game.
