Newcastle United are the latest side to be linked with a move for midfielder Lassana Diarra.

The former Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid star is available on a free transfer after his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow was torn up following a bust-up with the coach.

Tottenham were reported to be in talks with the 29-year-old and QPR came close to signing him on transfer deadline day.

The France international flew into Scotland for talks with Celtic on Friday, but the move is being held up because Lokomotiv have not released his registration. Newcastle have now launched a last-gasp attempt to convince Diarra to join them instead, claims they Sunday People.

Celtic have offered Diarra a two-year deal, but the Magpies are reportedly hoping the offer of a return to the Premier League will give them the edge.

The would offer him a contract until the end of the season, which Diarra is said to prefer so that he can keep his options open for next season.

His arrival could be invaluable if Cheick Tiote joins Napoli in January.
